Falls Are Top Cause of Injury, Death Among Elderly (HealthDay)

HealthDay - SATURDAY, July 19 (HealthDay News) -- Falls are a leading causeof serious injury and death among elderly people in l arginine hcl l ornithine hcl powder United States, andmost of those falls occur in the home, says the American Geriatric Society(AGS).

Dietary supplements are big business- -and big opportunity for a businessperson. As with anything, however, potential danger is there. You, as a marketer of these products, can be a hero to your customers by telling them these five things.

1. Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Drugs must undergo clinical studies to determine their safety and effectiveness, but manufacturers of dietary supplements do not have to prove safety or effectiveness.

In recognition of the role that dietary supplements can play in the promotion of health and prevention of disease, however, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) in 1994. This act defined dietary supplements, addressed safety issues, called for good manufacturing practices (GMPs) to be used in their production, and developed the supplement facts label that is now in use.

2. They can have side effects. Some commonly used supplements sometimes have side effects such as allergic reactions, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, and weight gain. One in particular may have an adverse effect on the liver.

3. They can interact with prescription drugs. For example:

--Coenzyme Q10 has been associated with potential interactions with warfarin.
--Echinacea should not be used with other known hepatoxic drugs.
--Postmenopausal women who take melatonin may experience reduced glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.

4. They also can interact with food. People using St. John's wort, for example, should avoid amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine, beer, wine, coffee, chocolate, fava beans, yogurt, salami, and smoked or pickled foods, all of which contain chemicals that cause high blood pressure and nausea.

5. Finally, they can be contaminated. Several popular products were found to contain whole insects, insect fragments, and animal hairs. Ocean-derived products are sometimes contaminated with sand and accumulations of heavy metals.

DSHEA provides ways to avoid contamination, however:

--Choose products that are standardized. The USP mark indicates that the manufacturer is following US pharmacopoeia standards.
--Choose products that have been tested. The label should say if the brand has undergone scientific testing.
--Choose a brand that adheres to higher manufacturing standards than required. All herbal product manufacturers must follow GMPs.

Educate your audience about your products, and you'll establish yourself as a trustworthy source of information. And when people trust you, they buy from you.

When you're ready to create information products to educate your audience about every aspect of your dietary supplements, be sure to choose a copywriter with a passion for natural health and, preferably, a formal education in a related field.
